What Is Stamped Concrete

Stamped concrete is a way to make regular concrete look like something else. We pour the concrete like normal, but before it hardens completely, we press patterns into it using special stamps. The result looks like brick, stone, slate, wood planks, or whatever pattern you choose.

The process has come a long way in recent years. Modern stamps and coloring techniques create incredibly realistic results. Unless someone looks closely, they will think you installed expensive pavers or natural stone. But you get those looks with the durability and lower maintenance of concrete.

Here in Owasso, stamped concrete is popular for patios, walkways, pool decks, and driveways. It handles our Oklahoma weather better than many natural materials, and it costs a fraction of what you would pay for actual stone or brick pavers. Plus, there are no gaps between pavers for weeds to grow through.

We can stamp concrete anywhere you would normally pour regular concrete. The only limitation is that the area needs to be fairly level to start with. Steep slopes can be tricky, though not impossible. The technique works on any concrete surface, whether vertical or horizontal.

Popular Decorative Concrete Options

Stamping is just one way to make concrete look special. We offer several decorative options, each with its own look and benefits. Here are the most popular choices with homeowners in the area.

  • Stamped patterns: This includes designs that mimic brick, cobblestone, slate, flagstone, wood planks, and more. We have dozens of stamp patterns to choose from. The texture and joint lines look remarkably realistic.
  • Colored concrete: We can color your concrete using integral color mixed throughout or color hardeners applied to the surface. Choose from earth tones, grays, reds, and more. Color can be used alone or combined with stamping.
  • Exposed aggregate: This technique reveals the natural stones in the concrete by washing away the top layer of cement paste while the concrete is still fresh. It creates a textured, natural look and provides excellent traction.
  • Stained concrete: We apply acid or water-based stains to existing concrete to create rich, variegated colors. This works great for garage floors, basements, and existing patios you want to upgrade.
  • Scored and cut patterns: After the concrete hardens, we can cut decorative patterns into it to create a tile or geometric look. This is less expensive than stamping and works on new or existing concrete.

How the Stamping Process Works

Let me walk you through what happens when we install stamped concrete. Understanding the process helps you see why it takes the time it does and why proper installation matters so much.

We start with the same site preparation as any concrete work. That means excavating, building a solid base, and setting up forms. This foundation work is critical. If the base is not right, even the prettiest stamped concrete will crack or settle.

Before we pour, we choose the colors. Most stamped concrete uses two or more colors to create depth and realism. The base color goes throughout the concrete or gets applied as a hardener. The accent color goes on top to highlight the texture and joint lines.

After pouring and initial finishing, the real artistry begins. We apply a release agent so the stamps will not stick to the concrete. Then we press the stamp mats firmly into the surface. Each mat has a pattern on it, and we fit them together like puzzle pieces to create a continuous design. The timing has to be just right. Too wet and the stamps sink in too far. Too dry and the pattern will not take.

Once we complete the stamping, we let the concrete cure. After a day or two, we wash off the release agent. This reveals the full color and pattern. At this stage, you can really see how it is going to look. Then we apply sealer to protect the surface and enhance the colors.

The whole process takes longer than regular concrete because of the extra steps. Plan on having the crew there most of the day for the stamping work. And remember, you cannot walk on it for at least 24 hours, and should wait a few days before putting furniture or heavy items on the surface.

Maintaining Your Decorative Concrete

One of the best things about decorative concrete is that it is fairly easy to maintain. You do not need to do much to keep it looking good for years. Here is what we recommend.

Clean it regularly with a hose or pressure washer. Dirt and debris do not hurt the concrete, but they can make it look dingy. A good cleaning once or twice a year is usually enough. For tougher stains like oil or grease, use a degreaser made for concrete.

Reseal the surface every 2 to 3 years. The sealer protects against moisture, staining, and wear. It also keeps the colors vibrant. You will know it is time to reseal when water stops beading up on the surface. Resealing is not difficult, and you can do it yourself or hire us to do it.

Avoid deicing chemicals in winter if possible. Salt and some chemical deicers can damage both the sealer and the concrete surface. If you need something for ice, use sand for traction instead. If you must use a deicer, choose one labeled safe for decorative concrete.

Watch for cracks and fix them promptly. While stamped concrete is durable, it can still crack like any concrete. Small cracks can be filled and colored to match. Catching them early prevents water from getting underneath and causing bigger problems.
