Concrete Pool Decks
Create a safe, stylish pool deck that stays cool underfoot and complements your backyard oasis.

Why Concrete for Pool Decks
When you are building or renovating a pool area, the deck is almost as important as the pool itself. You need a surface that is safe, durable, and looks good. Concrete checks all those boxes and costs less than many alternatives.
Safety is the top priority around pools. Concrete can be textured to provide excellent slip resistance even when wet. This matters because pool decks are wet most of the time people are using them. A properly finished concrete deck helps prevent slips and falls.
Durability is another key factor. Pool decks get splashed with chlorinated water constantly. They sit in direct sun. People walk on them barefoot carrying sharp pool toys. The material needs to handle all that without deteriorating or becoming uncomfortable. Concrete does the job for decades with basic maintenance.
Concrete also stays cooler than many materials. Here in Oklahoma, summer sun can make some deck surfaces scorching hot. While no surface stays completely cool in direct sun, lighter-colored concrete stays more comfortable to walk on barefoot than darker materials or wood.
Finally, concrete offers design flexibility. You can pour it in any shape to fit around your pool perfectly. No trying to make rectangular pavers work around curved pool edges. And with colors, stamps, and textures, you can create any look from natural stone to modern minimalist.
Design Options for Pool Decks
Your pool deck does not have to be plain gray concrete. We offer several decorative options that add style while maintaining the safety and durability you need.
- Stamped concrete: Create the look of natural stone, travertine, or brick. Stamped pool decks are popular because they look upscale and the texture provides good traction when wet.
- Colored concrete: Choose from earth tones that complement natural surroundings or blues and grays that echo the pool water. Lighter colors stay cooler in summer sun.
- Exposed aggregate: This reveals the natural stones in the concrete for a textured, upscale look. It provides excellent slip resistance and stays relatively cool.
- Broom and brush finishes: Simple textured finishes that provide traction without decorative patterns. These are budget-friendly and very practical.
- Spray deck finishes: A textured coating sprayed over the concrete that can include decorative elements and provides a slightly cushioned surface.

Building a Pool Deck That Lasts
Installing a pool deck involves more than just pouring concrete around the pool. There are specific considerations for this application.
Drainage is critical. Water needs to drain away from the pool, not toward it. We slope the deck slightly away from the pool edge so splashed water and rain run off. We also plan for where that water goes. You do not want a river running across your yard every time it rains or kids get out of the pool.
Width matters for safety and function. Building codes typically require at least 4 feet of deck width around pools, but we recommend more if space allows. Six to eight feet gives you room for lounge chairs and walking around without feeling cramped. On the diving board end, you might want even more space.
The concrete needs proper reinforcement because it sits next to a large water-filled structure. We use rebar in a grid pattern to handle any settling or movement. We also install expansion joints between the deck and the pool structure so they can move independently without cracking.
Finish texture is a balance between slip resistance and comfort. Too rough and it hurts to walk on barefoot. Too smooth and it gets dangerously slippery when wet. We use finishes that provide good traction while remaining comfortable for bare feet. This is where our experience really matters.
Maintaining Your Pool Deck
Pool decks need a bit more attention than other concrete because of the constant exposure to water and pool chemicals. Here is how to keep yours in good shape.
Rinse it regularly with fresh water. Pool water contains chlorine and other chemicals that can damage concrete and its sealer over time. After pool parties or heavy use, hose down the deck to wash away chemical residue. This simple step extends the life of your deck finish.
Seal the concrete every 2 to 3 years. A good penetrating sealer protects against moisture, staining, and chemical damage. It also enhances the color if you have decorative concrete. Sealing is especially important for pool decks because of the harsh environment they live in.
Watch for cracks and fix them promptly. Any crack can let water underneath, which leads to bigger problems. Fill small cracks with concrete crack filler and reseal the area. If you notice settling or larger cracks, call us to evaluate whether you need more extensive repairs.
Clean stains quickly. Sunscreen, tanning oil, leaves, and algae can all stain concrete. A pressure washer and concrete cleaner handle most stains. For tough stains, there are specialized products. The key is not letting stains sit for months before trying to clean them.
